Australia increases entry biosecurity fines from 01/07/2026: remember to declare food

If you're planning to travel to kangaroo land, study abroad, visit relatives, or settle down in the near future, this is a particularly important rule to keep in mind.

From the date 01/07/2026The Australian Government has officially imposed a new stricter penalty framework, sharply increasing financial penalties for all passengers who fail to declare or dishonestly declare food, medicinal herbs and quarantine items upon entry at international airports.

1. New Penalties Apply From 01/07/2026

Australia has a reputation for being one of the countries with the most stringent biosecurity systems in the world to protect its unique agriculture and ecosystems. This adjustment pushes the fine level up very high, divided into 3 main groups of violations:

  • ⚠️ A fine of AUD 728 (About VND 13 million):
    • Subjects of application: Passengers who unintentionally or intentionally fail to declare, make false declarations, or dishonestly answer questions of quarantine officers about the goods carried in their luggage.
  • ⚠️ Fines ranging from AUD 2,184 to AUD 4,368 (Approximately VND 40 – 79 million):
    • Subjects of application: Passengers carrying items with high biosafety risks without declaration. This group includes: fresh meat, meat products (clogs/cheap, silk ham, sausages), foods capable of carrying pathogens or harmful insects.
  • ⚠️ “Extremely" fine of AUD 7,280 (More than VND 130 million):
    • Subjects of application: Passengers who commit acts of deliberate fraud, hide goods by sophisticated tricks in order to bypass the inspection of the customs authorities and the professional dog force.

🚫 More serious consequences than fines: In addition to being fined in cash right at the airport, all infringing goods will be confiscated and destroyed immediately. For cases of serious violations or deliberate fraud, Australian Department of Immigration has the right to cancel a visa on the spotDeportation to your home country and a ban on entry to Australia for a minimum of 3 years.

2. List of "Forced" Goods to Be Declared (Select "YES")

A lot of Vietnamese passengers accidentally break the rules just because they think it's "ripe food", "dry goods" or "country gifts". To ensure safety, if your baggage has any of the items below, please check the box "yes" (yes) on the Immigration Declaration (Incoming Passenger Card):

  • Fresh & Processed Foods Group: Meat (chicken, beef, pork, etc. including shrimp noodles with meat packs), fish, dried/fresh seafood, eggs, milk, butter, honey.
  • Agricultural products: Fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts (sunflower seeds, cashews, beans), cereals, dried foods, or processed foods.
  • Group of traditional medicine: Oriental medicines, traditional medicines, herbal medicines, functional foods of animal or plant origin.
  • Souvenirs & Crafts Group: Furniture made from wood, bamboo, rattan, dried flowers, seeds, leather, fur, animal bones, ...
    • Special Note: Even... leaf cone Vietnam also needs to declare because it is made from palm leaves/dry plant material.
  • Group of dirty items: Sports shoes, hiking shoes, or camping equipment that are dirty, muddy, or that have been used on farms or stables in Vietnam.

3. The Secret of Safe Entry: Understanding Quarantine Regulations

In order for your trip to go smoothly, you need to clearly distinguish the two core concepts:

  • DECLARATION OF CONTRIBUTION TO SAFETY: Many people who are afraid of declaring that they will be confiscated choose to hide it. In fact, declaring does not mean is that your items are definitely seized. Quarantine staff will check directly, which items are eligible (packed clearly labeled, not carrying pathogens) will be brought in, which items do not meet will be retained canceled. But most importantly: You will not be fined or imprisoned for being honest.
  • The principle of "More abundant than deficient": If you stand in front of an item (such as a package of cake, a box of tea) and wonder whether to declare or not? Choose "YES". This carefulness has never been superfluous in the face of Australian customs.
