Temporary Graduate Visa – subclass 485 is one of the popular options for international students to stay in Australia after completing their studies to work, gain experience and prepare for the next visa steps.
However, since the changes are in place from 2024 and continue into 2026, the conditions of the 485 visa have been much tighter than before.
🎓 1. Age: up to 35
Now, most applicants have to... 35 years old or younger at the time of application.
Some exceptions apply, notably users by Master by Research or PhD To meet the academic eligibility can be considered to be under 50 years old. Some cases with Hong Kong passports or British National Overseas also have their own regulations.
👉 So if you plan to study abroad and later use a 485 visa, age is a factor that should be calculated right from the time of choosing a study path.

Applicants 485 must demonstrate English proficiency as required by the Australian Department of the Interior.
With exams taken from 7/8/2025, the most common level for IELTS is Overall 6.5, no skills below 5.5. Other certificates such as PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, CELPIP, MET also have corresponding scores prescribed by Home Affairs. Normal English results must be issued in 12 months prior to the visa application date.
3. No more "plus 2 years" policy as before
This is the point many parents and students still confuse.
Previously, a number of degrees belonging to the selected industry group could be plus 2 years on the period of stay under visa 485.

Second Post-Higher Education Work stream still exists for those who meet the condition on study and reside in the Regional.
In accordance with current regulations, applicants must meet the conditions related to qualifications, first 485 visa and have live in the Regional area for at least 2 years right before applying. The second time visa can be from 1–2 years, depending on the area of study and residence.
📌 5. Don't just look at the time spent staying
An effective study abroad pathway should not only take into account "graduation for 485".
Students should calculate from the beginning:
Coursework → qualifications → condition 485 → length of stay → work experience → workmanship visa or business-guaranteed visa.
Especially, if your long-term goal is to work and settle in Australia, choosing majors, degree levels, and study locations can significantly affect visa options later on.
