A report by Statistics Canada noted that the country had the highest number of understaffed jobs in history.

According to the Canada Statistics Agency's Report on Employment Opportunities, Salaries, and Income, since the beginning of the first quarter of 2022, more than 1 million job positions have been opened for workers in the country.
The Canadian labor market recorded a record number of manpower jobs, with 1,012,900 jobs in Q1 2022, an increase of 988,300 jobs compared to Q3 2021. February to March saw an increase of 186,400 jobs to be employed. The percentage of manpower jobs – the percentage of manpower jobs and employed workers – was 5.9%, equal to Q3 2021 (no seasonal adjustments).
The number of jobs in need of workers has increased by more than a third in the restaurant & hotel service and retail sectors. Specifically, restaurant & hotel service employers are hiring 158,000 workers, along with 109,200 workers in the retail sector.
The demand for health & social protection and construction sectors has also increased record-breakingly. The health & social protection sector is currently in 154,500 jobs in need of workers. Meanwhile, construction enterprises are looking for 81,900 people, an unprecedented number.
Employment opportunities are available throughout the provinces. Employment demand is at its highest monthly in the states of Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition, the number of jobs requiring workers is at a record high in Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia.
On average in March there were about 1.2 unemployed people per vacant job, down 0.2% from February. At the same time, the unemployment rate saw a record decrease of 5.3% and the labor participation rate of the 25-54 age group was 87%, a remarkably high figure.

Labour shortages occur mainly in Quebec and British Columbia, with an unemployment rate of 0.8%. The tighter the labor market, the lower the unemployment rate. Newfoundland and Labrador, the two states, saw the highest rate of 4.3%.
From July 2021, the number of jobs needed to recruit personnel continued to decrease gradually over the next 5 months due to seasonal demand for jobs. In Canada, economic activity is strong in the spring – summer and decreases in the winter.
Statistics Canada is expected to release employment figures for workers in 2022 on June 24. At the same time, the survey on Employment Opportunities and Wages in the first quarter of 2022 will also be published on June 21.
