How many family members can accompany a student to Canada?

Canada's study and immigration policies change quite often, especially the regulations related to accompanying personSo if you're planning study in Canada with family, this article will help you visualize clear and lawful: who can follow, how and under what circumstances.

1. Can Canadian students take their families with them?

The answer is yes., but not everyone is the same, and... not all clothes are the same.

Study Abroad Canada can lead along:

  • Spouse (s)
  • Dependent children

👉 Applicable to married international students.
Younger kids and single people do n't fall into this category.

2. What is the status of the spouse of the student?

🔹 Case 1: Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) – JOB-FREE

Spouse (s) can apply for Open Work Permit if the student:

  • Study Master's Degree or PhD
  • Programme duration Minimum 16 months
  • Or study some Qualified Bachelor of Professionals Programs

👉 With SOWP, spouse:

  • Eligible to legal full-time work
  • No industry restrictions
  • No job offer required

🔹 Case 2: Please Work Permit according to the PGWP of the student

After studying abroad:

  • Graduate
  • Receive PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit)
  • Have a job in TEER 0, 1, or some TEER 2, 3 groups are eligible

👉 Then, the spouse can:

  • Please Work Permit based on your PGWP
  • Important Conditions: PGWP of international students must remain Minimum 16 months at the time of submission

🔹 Case 3: Open Study Permit (OSP) – ENROLLMENT

If... not eligible for Work Permit, spouse may:

  • Xin Open Study Permit
  • No LOA needed
  • No PAL required

⚠️ Very important note:

  • OSP can only be submitted if the spouse is not yet in Canada
  • Not for renewal if the person is already in Canada and is about to expire his/her license

🔹 Case 4: Visitor Visa – VISIT

If the above conditions are not met:

  • Spouse can apply Visitor Visa
  • Each entry is staying up to 6 months

👉 If you are already in Canada and want to stay longer:

  • May I ask... Visitor Record to extend your stay

3. what about children who follow international students?

👶 Children under the age of majority:

  • Below 18 years old (or) 19 years old (depending on the province)
  • Learned FREE from:
    • Kindergarten
    • Primary school
    • Public High School

👉 Apply when:

  • Father or mother is Legal learning in Canada
  • Regardless of education level (College, Bachelor, Master...)

🎓 When your child reaches adulthood:

  • I have to... Apply for Independent Study Permit
  • To continue studying College / University

4. so I study abroad – can you come?

👉 There's no long - term commitment.

Parents of international students:

  • Do not apply for Work Permit
  • No accompanying Study Permit

👉 Only can:

  • Xin Visitor Visa
  • Visiting my son up to 6 months per entry

5. very important notes when doing the whole family profile

📌 Financial proof (CMTC):

  • The more people you profile → the higher the CMTC amount
  • Must calculate fully:
    • Tuition fees
    • Living expenses for each member

📌 Comply with the license you are holding:

  • Work Permit → go to work on time
  • Study Permit → study under the right conditions
  • Visitor → do not go to work, do not go to school unauthorized

⚠️ Violations of one person may affect:

  • The other person's profile
  • Opportunity to renew
  • PR Roadmap Later

Conclusion

✔️ Study in Canada can go with family
✔️ But... Which way to go depends a lot on the grade level and when.
✔️ Need Planning from scratch, should not “go to where counted"

👉 If you are considering studying in Canada with your spouse or children, understanding the right policy from the beginning will help:

  • Avoid Profile Risk
  • Save time & cost
  • Protect the long-term Canadian stay route for the whole family
