New South Wales (NSW) has just announced a remarkable change in general education: public schools will begin limited time for students to use digital equipment for learning from the beginning of 2027.
This move shows that Australian education is increasingly focusing on balance between technology and traditional learning methodsinstead of seeing multiple devices as the only thing that makes up a modern learning environment.

📱 How long will NSW students be using the digital device?
According to the new NSW guidelines, the usage time of the device will be adjusted depending on age and education level:
- Preschool: Do not use the student's personal equipment.
- Kindergarten – Year 2: Up to 15 minutes/day.
- Year 3 – Year 4: Up to 30 minutes/day.
- Year 5 – Year 6: Up to 45 minutes/day.
- Year 7 – Year 10: A maximum of about 1/4 of the duration of each subject.
- Year 11 – Year 12: A maximum of about 1/2 the duration of each subject.
These limits are calculated on total study time in a weekRather than simply understanding that students are limited day by day in all circumstances.
In addition, schools are recommended to limit the use of digital equipment for homework; the assignment of work entirely on digital equipment is also not recommended for students before Year 5.
NSW also recommends students have at least 1 hour of study per day with screen-free methods, such as handwriting and traditional learning activities.
🇦🇺 Why did NSW make this change?
The remarkable thing is this. It's not about cutting technology out of schools..
Laptops, tablets and digital platforms still play an important role in modern education. However, NSW is moving towards a more balanced approach, in which technology is used when it really supports lesson objectives, while spending more time on foundational skills such as:
- Reading and writing;
- Handwritten;
- Focus for long periods of time;
- Talk directly to teachers and friends;
- Group activities and interaction in class;
- Learning does n't depend entirely on screens.
In other words, “Modern school” does not mean that students have to constantly look at the screen.
🎓 A look for parents looking to study in Australia
For families preparing their children to study in Australia, this is a point of concern.
Many parents often envision an Australian educational environment where students use laptops, tablets and technology in most of their learning activities. In fact, schools are increasingly interested in the more important question: Does technology really help students learn better in each situation?
Therefore, when choosing a school for their children, parents should not only care about the facilities or the level of technology application. Factors such as teaching methods, curriculum, class sizes, extracurricular activities, ability to support international students and the skill development environment is also very important.
Especially for Vietnamese students who are coming to Australia for the first time, choosing a suitable learning environment can significantly affect their adaptability and academic results in their early years.
🌏 Is this a general trend across Australia?
NSW's change should not be understood as a regulation that applies to all schools across Australia.
The above policy is implemented for Public schools in New South Wales. Other Australian states and territories may have their own policies and ways of managing the use of digital equipment.
Therefore, when choosing a school, parents should check directly state regulations, school systems and individual schools instead of adopting a general policy for all of Australia.

🇦🇺 Studying in Australia: More than just choosing a school
A suitable study abroad roadmap should be built based on many factors: the age of students, academic ability, English ability, family budget, city intended to live and long-term study orientation.
Changes such as NSW's policy also show one thing: The value of education lies not in how much technology students use, but in how technology is used to support learning.
If the family is inquiring study abroad in Australia for high schoolLearning the curriculum and the actual environment of each school will help parents make better choices for their children.
