If your study abroad itinerary is clearly defined by the formula Study in the UK $\rightarrow$ Work experience accumulation $\rightarrow$ Permanent residence, the beginning of labor market research and sponsorship ability right from the step of choosing the industry is the factor that determines 90% of the chances of success.
Many international students make the mistake of waiting until they have a diploma to start looking for a job. Knowing the legal provisions on working visas from the beginning helps you proactively build an optimal study and career development strategy.

1. Skilled Worker Visa Prerequisites
In order to successfully convert to a skilled worker visa, your application must meet three core criteria:
- Valid Job Offer: Employed by a business licensed by the British Home Office Sponsor Licence.
- Occupation Code: The job position must be on the list of occupations eligible for visa issuance as prescribed.
- Minimum salary: Meets the standard wage threshold (usually from £41,700/year or above) or the industry average salary (going rate), depending on which condition is higher.
Important Notes: Sponsor Licence holders do not guarantee all positions. Many corporations prefer sponsorships for specific management or professional roles.
2. Important changes to Visa UK policy
The UK work visa policy is constantly being adjusted towards tightening the standard of workmanship. Here are the regulatory milestones you are required to update:
- Workmanship Standards (RQF Level 6+): Most of the new job positions that want to be guaranteed must be in the skilled group (Higher Skilled - University or higher qualification equivalent). Working in the group of average workmanship (Medium Skilled) is strictly limited in some exceptions.
- Stop recruiting Care Workers outside the UK: The UK Government has officially closed the new direct overseas recruitment route for care workers (Care Worker and Senior Care Worker).
- English proficiency requirements: New applications for Skilled Worker Visa are required to meet minimum Level B2 theo khung CEFR.
- Graduate Visa Rules: It's a temporary visa to gain experience, not a resident visa and does not automatically convert to Skilled Worker. Applications submitted from 01/01/2027 are normally only issued for the period 18 months.
- Student Visa Work Rights: During the study period, students are only allowed to work overtime maximum 20 hours/week during the semester (applicable to qualified courses).

3. Beware of Sponsor (CoS) scams
Guarantee costs are the obligatory legal responsibility of the employer (Employer).
- Do not trade CoS: Any act that requires workers to pay money to "buy a Certificate of Sponsorship" (CoS) or "stay a deposit to keep sponsorship" is a serious violation of the law.
- Visa revocation risk: Illegal use of CoS will result in visa denials or visa cancellations immediately upon detection.
3 step test formula before deciding on an industry
To avoid wasting time and budget studying abroad, before applying to any major, do the examination in order:
Job - occupation code - salary
- Job: What are the job goals you want to do after college?
- Occupation Code: Is the position in the list of approved CoS?
- Salary Level: Does the actual starting salary of that industry in the market reach the minimum threshold set by Home Office?
Note: UK immigration regulations may change from time to time. You should regularly update the latest official information at the GOV.UK website before making important decisions.
