Studying in the UK through GCSE programmes

For students who are in need of studying in international schools, or wish to study abroad from high school or pre-university, GCSE is a special concern of many students and parents. So what is GCSE?

GCSE General Certificate of Secondary Education – This is a compulsory education program with a training period of 2 years. Students need to pass this exam to obtain the GCSE – the first official certificate of the UK system.

In addition, there are programs GCSE International (IGCSE – International GCSE) is designed based on the foundation of the GCSE program in the UK. However, this program is built more optimally than the UK and is suitable for many other countries around the world. Currently, the international GCSE training program has been selected by more than 100 countries to apply, including many international schools in Vietnam.

The target audience of this program is students between the ages of 14-15, corresponding to the high school level in our country. Therefore, those who have completed the 9th grade program in Vietnam can also enroll in the GCSE program.

What are the requirements for GCSE?

Not everyone who wants to study this program can learn it. Conditions for studying GCSE are that you must complete the following programs and obtain the following certificates:

  • Completed junior high school in 8th grade or equivalent.
  • IELTS score 4.5 or higher or TOEFL IBT score higher than 34 points

Subjects in the International GCSE Program

Compulsory subjects in GCSE include: Maths, English and Science. There are also some electives you can enroll in such as Anthropology, IT,...

In the current international GCSE system, you have the opportunity to access up to 40 subjects in different fields. Specifically:

  • Social Sciences: Health, Sociology, Public Health Care and Economics,...

  • Modern languages: German, Italian, Spanish, ...
  • Arts: Music, Dance, Drama and Media Arts, etc.

In addition, in the GCSE system, students are also registered in the form of Applied GCSE, which is practically applied to the learning process. On average, each student must participate in 8/10 of those subjects, including electives and compulsory subjects. Specifically, 10 subjects are: Business, Design, Construction, ICT (Information Technology), Entertainment, Tourism, Health and Social Care, Engineering, Science, Manufacturing, ...

How are GCSEs ranked?

Previously, GCSE students were graded between A* (highest) and G (lowest). Grades below the G mark were marked as unclassified U. However, things have been changed. Grades now range from 9 (highest) to 1 (lowest).

  • Grade 9 - The highest grade is even higher than A
  • Grade 8 - Under A
  • Grade 7 - Slightly below grade A
  • Grade 6 – A little better than B
  • Grade 5 – Under grade B but higher than C. Also called Passed
  • Grade 4 – Equivalent to a C grade. Also known as pass standard
  • Grade 3 – Below Point D but above E
  • Class 2 – Between E and F
  • Grade 1 – Between F and G
  • Ungraded - The lowest possible grade. As in the old system, the letter U denotes the grade.

How important are GCSE courses?

The GCSE is the most widely held exam that students take before attending college or university. This result has a huge impact on student's future.

Many undergraduate courses require a minimum of 5 GCSE at level 4 or higher (C or higher in the old classification system) and some require grade 6 years (A or A*).

Some university courses only accept students from grade 6 or above (A or A*) in that subject for the GCSE and universities usually require a minimum of grade 4 (C or above) in English, math, and at least one science subject before they accept you for any course. So, with higher education and careers, the GCSE can be the most important exam.
