How much does it cost to study in the US?

The United States is both the world's most popular destination for international students and one of the most expensive options.

In HSBC's 2014 report on study abroad costs in destinationsThe United States has emerged as the third most expensive option in the world, after Australia and Singapore. According to this report, the average cost of a year of study in the United States - including tuition and living expenses - is US $36,564. To get a bachelor's degree, you must multiply that number by 4 times, and to know the cost of studying for master's degrees in the United States, you must double the amount. The article below will help you better understand the cost of studying in the United States.

Cost of studying at various American universities

If you go to top schools, the cost will be more expensive than the “regular" schools in middle school, then the fees and living expenses will probably be more expensive to about $ 60,000 per year. But there are also schools that will “burden" your money much less, especially in public schools.

There are two types of schools in the United States – public and private, with different fees. Even public schools offer two types of tuition for local and foreign students.

According to the College Board, the average tuition fee for public schools is $25,620 per year for international students, compared to the average tuition fee for private schools of $34,740 per year.

The most economical option is to take a two - year program at a public university, also known as Community College/Technical College or City College. These schools only cost you about $3,570/year for 2017/2018 school year.

After completing these two years, of course, you will not receive a bachelor's degree, but an associate's degree, which will allow you to transfer to a university for two more years.

Below is an overview of the cost of self-study in the United States in the academic year 2018 - 2019 (according to College Board):

The tuition fee is only a part of the cost. You also have to calculate the cost of living, transportation, etc. This is the annual cost of living for Bachelor's degree students according to College Board estimates:

  • $16,325 (Community college)
  • $23,410 (Indigenous Bachelor Students - Public University)
  • $37,229 (International Bachelor Students - Public University)
  • $46,272 (Bachelor's Student - Private University)

However, it's also worth noting that at prestigious public universities, the cost is sometimes roughly the same as private schools. University of Michigan(the highest ranked public university in the US, according to QS World University Rankings) announced an average tuition fee for international students of $47,476 per year, excluding $11,198 in accommodation and $1,048 in books and supplies.
