The UK education system

English education system

The UK education system

English education system

The educational programme in the UK can be reviewed as follows:

1/ Primary level

Class 1 – Class 6 (Students aged 5 – 11 years old).

In the UK, compulsory education begins for all students from the age of 5 with a 6 year Primary education. Similar to Vietnam, most of the Primary education is taught by a single teacher. Students aged 5 years and younger can participate in the Kindergarten program, but it is not compulsory.

At the age of 7, students are taught the main subjects but are also encouraged to take extracurricular subjects such as Art, Computer Science or Music.

2/ Secondary level

Lasts 5 years (Students aged 11 – 16)

High School in the UK This course lasts for 5 years, starting from the time students graduate from Primary school. Unlike many countries that will take secondary school classes and award high school diplomas, in the last 2 years of the high school program, students in the UK will study GCSE (equivalent to grade 10 level in Vietnam), awarding GCSE according to the British standards. Vietnamese students aged 14 and older, with IELTS 4.5 – 5.5 can take this course.

In the GCSE program, there will be more than 40 subjects of different subgroups for students to register, including:

  1. Humanities (English Literature, Courtesy,...)
  2. Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry,...)
  3. Social Sciences (Medical Care, Sociology, Economics,...)
  4. Technology (Information Technology, Engineering, ...)
  5. Creative (Art, Music,...)
  6. Modern and Old Languages (Latin, Urdu,..)

Students will need to study 8 subjects of the above groups of disciplines, including some compulsory subjects and some electives. The scores of the subjects in the program will be calculated from A* to G, of which A* is the highest score.

3/ Post-secondary level

After graduating from the GCSE program, students will study in the post-secondary program, which is the foundation for the Bachelor course. UK Reserve Programmes There are 3 different courses: A-level, International Baccalaureate and Pre-University. Normally, English students will choose the A-level program as their springboard.

  • A-level:

A-Level Program This course lasts for 2 years, equivalent to grades 11 and 12 in Vietnam; students over 16 years old, with good academic performance and IELTS 5. – 5.5 can enroll in this course. A-Level Program It will also include 7 – 8 subjects and is a UK national standard program.

  • International Baccalaureate (IB)

Like A-level, IB program lasts for 2 years with 6 electives and 3 extra requirements for graduation including: Writing essays, taking courses in Cognition and CAS extracurricular activities. This is considered to be the most difficult program in the Post-School programs in the UK, so it requires students to have good academic and foreign language ability.

  • University Preparation

The program lasts for 1 year, is trained by universities or educational institutions affiliated with universities. Students aged 17 and older, with IELTS 4.5 – 5.5 can participate in this program. The course consists of 4 subjects, including 1 English subject and 3 specialized subjects – considered the easiest course.

In addition, students can also take the College course, then transfer to the Bachelor's degree.

4/ University level

Duration: 3 – 4 years (usually 3 years)

After obtaining an A-level, IB or Foundation Degree, students will proceed to a Bachelor's Degree program, which usually lasts 3 years. Students can take dual degree programs or continue for 1 year to earn Honors degrees. Students can study at public or private schools for a Bachelor's Degree with tuition fees of ~10,000 – 17,000 GBP/year.

5/ Postgraduate level

After graduating from University, students can fully participate in programs such as:

+ Post Graduate Certificate / Diploma: 6 months – 2 years.

+ Master: 1 – 2 years.

+ Doctor: 3 - 4 years.

Graduate education is only offered at accredited formal universities in the United Kingdom.

Most Vietnamese students choose the UK for their Master's degree course for three main reasons:

+ The program usually lasts only 1 year - saving time and learning costs; completion of the Master's course with ~ 600 million.

+ The world's leading academic education system, especially for research programs.

+ Long-standing, experienced universities with high-quality lecturers.
