Pre-university in England - the door to the perfect university degree

Foundation-level study is for those who cannot afford to apply to a university the traditional way. When choosing this program, you will be training the knowledge and skills needed to meet the entry requirements of Bachelor's programmes in the United Kingdom (UK). There are hundreds of preparatory courses in many fields such as Engineering, E-Commerce, Health, Social Care or even Veterinary Medicine.
Reasons to choose a university preparatory programme in the UK
You should choose to study preparation in the UK because this is where many prestigious universities offer this form of training. Here are the main reasons you should choose to participate in the preparation program for your study abroad journey:
- Pre-university programs are a stepping stone that can help you get into the Bachelor's programs of world - renowned universities without the usual A level.
- The Foundation Program is suitable for international students with limited English proficiency as you will have plenty of time to improve your English skills before embarking on essay writing and other forms of testing.
- The preparatory program makes it easy for you to integrate into a foreign country quickly. As the preparatory course lasts for up to 1 year, you are able to get acquainted with the surrounding environment, make new friends and learn about the local culture before entering the Bachelor program.
Overview of Pre-School Program
International students in the UK can take a foundation programme lasting three terms (one year), while programmes in some other countries last two terms. Students are assessed through essays, presentations, group assignments and some end-of-term examinations.
Upon completion of the course, students will receive final assessment results. The examination and grading method will be similar to the A level program in the form of credits or 4 grades. To be able to enter the Bachelor's program, you must achieve the required score after the end of the preparatory program.
Admission Requirements
The entry requirements for the preparatory programmes in the UK will vary depending on the school. Generally, Vietnamese students need to complete at least 12 years of general education in their home country. Some schools may require students to have studied certain subjects at the high school level. For example, if you choose to study in a Science-oriented preparatory programme, you must prove that you have studied Science subjects before.
The course also requires IELTS scores from 4.5 to 6.0. You can improve your English skills before entering the preparatory program by taking summer courses or enrolling in English language courses.
Proactively following the latest information on immigration laws is also a good thing to do as this has a direct impact on your study abroad. Under the law, you are not allowed to extend your stay in the UK beyond 2 years if you choose to study in a lower level of the bachelor's degree or have less than 1 year of study.
How to apply for admission
You will apply through the University & Colleges Admissions Service (UCSA), which admissions processes for universities in the UK.

After choosing the course you want, you need to complete the application form and submit it to the school before the application deadline, which usually falls in June for the first semester in September. You can refer to the article "6 steps to register to study in the UK through UCAS” on HCVN for more details.
In August and September, the Clearing process will be conducted by UCAS. This is when universities have not yet recruited enough students as their quotas and will send invitations to candidates who have not yet applied to the university. The Clearing process will be a backup for those who are not really sure about their initial university choices.
