Using public transport in Toronto

Toronto's public transport is smart and modern, and it's fast and easy. The number of cars is large, so waiting times are short. Moreover, people are very observant to the traffic regulations, so everything works very smoothly.

Currently, there are 3 main types of public transportation in Toronto (Toronto Transit Commission – TTC)

🚎STREET CAR
Tram systems run on railways, joining traffic with other types of vehicles on the road such as cars, .... Although this type of vehicle is quite limited in route (only the main routes) but it still exists today because this is considered a feature of Toronto. This is a system built from the 50s of Toronto and everyone wants to retain the characteristics of this city. The most typical route is from Station Union to China Town.

🚟SUBWAY
There are four main lines; two of them (yellow and green) are considered the main arteries of this public transportation system.
▪The first line is the yellow line that follows the north-south direction, having the shape of a u on the chart
▪The second line is the green line that goes east-west
▪Third line – blue line
▪The fourth line – the dark pink line is very rarely used.
To go subway is quite simple, you just need to remember where you are and where you want to go and follow that line.

In addition, when you go to the subway, you will see 2 types of seats: red seat and blue seat. Red seat is for everyone. Blue seat is also known as a priority seat for the elderly and disabled. With the priority seat, you can also sit if the bus or subway is empty but if there are many people or people in need, remember to give them up.

🚌 BUS
The bus system in Toronto is quite intricate, so the simplest way is to note if there is a bus stop near you, which one is closest, and which way to go first.
Note: Even if you take any bus route, it will stop at a subway station. So, just know the subway route, even if you get lost; when you get to that subway station, you also know where you are.
Most of them are public transportation which operates from 5am to 1h30am the next day. If you have friends who come home late after 1h30, you can go by Night Bus, Taxi or Uber.

📌 Types of payment methods of TTC's system

🔰 Metropass
Monthly purchase with 2 fares
▪$116.75 CA for students
▪$146.75 CA for adults
To buy Metropass card with student fare, you must have Post- Secondary ID of TTC. So how to get this card? Quite simply, you can go to Sherbourne Station carrying your admission letter, timetable or ID / Passport and beautiful makeup for them to take pictures.
Note: When using Metropass with student fare, remember to always bring Post- Secondary ID. Otherwise, people will see this as a form of fraud.

🔰 Token/ ticket
▪It is a form of purchasing tokens (round coins). Each time you enter the TTC system, you will use 1 token. If you buy 3 or more tokens, it will be charged $3 / one. It will not expire like Metropass and can be used at any time. The disadvantage of the token is small, it is easy to fall and confuse with the 10 cent coin. Currently, the token is gradually being removed from the TTC system. According to information, in 2019, the token will be completely removed.
▪By the way, 1 token has reached $3 already, if within 1 month you go from 40 times or more (each day you use 2 tokens for the departure and return) then you should buy Metropass to save more for the cost of traveling 1 month.

🔰 Presto
Like a bank card. Just recharge the card, then when using the public system, you just tap on; the system will automatically deduct a corresponding amount of money to your card. In the future, Presto will be used for vehicles in the city because it has a very convenient way to pay, not to hold cash and not afraid to lose as tokens but still receive preferential policies from the bus system.

🔰 Cash – Cash
This is the most expensive and very inconvenient way to pay in TTC's system because you have to pay the full fare which is always $3.25.
Things to note:
▪ You have to prepare properly $3.25 when going to the bus because if you give $5 bills, they will not give money back; so this is a pretty disadvantage for you when using cash
▪ Pay the right amount for TTC vehicles. Because if you do not pay the right amount, it will be considered a form of fraud and you will be fined very heavy
▪ Get transfer right at the station you start or the first bus you go and keep it throughout your trip. Because if you get on the bus or subway, people have the right to check and if you do not have, you will also be fined. If you go to Presto, just tap 1 is OK.

♥️ Small tip: if you travel a lot, go out a lot on the weekends, then you can buy a Day Pass. For only $12.50 you can have 1 Day Pass to go many times to TTC's public transportation on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. For $12.50, it corresponds to about 4 tokens. But the special thing is that with the Day Pass, you can go 2 adults and 4 children under 19 years old. So if you want to go out a lot, the Day Pass is the best way.
