Australian visa categories

Visa is the first door you have to pass when you intend to come to Australia or any country. So what kind of visa do you need to note when coming to Australia and how many steps to go through Australian visa approval? The following review will help you have the most complete and accurate information.

Australian tourist visa (600 visa)

This type of visa is for temporary tourism or business purposes in Australia. That means, you can apply for a visa in two categories: 

Tourist Area 

For those who come to Australia temporarily for a holiday, visiting relatives or friends or other short-term purposes not working in Australia, including study purposes, training no more than 3 months. 

Business category 

For applicants travelling to Australia for the purpose of serving business and commercial activities including:

  • Serving the work for general businesses or government requirements,
  • Contract negotiation
  • Government Visits
  • Attend seminars, conferences, job interviews, or professional exams.

>>> Note: Temporary work visa (short-term activity) (visa extension 400) is suitable for those who wish to obtain a visa for the following purposes:

  • Perform work for organisations or individuals established in Australia
  • Sell products or services directly to the general public (retail).

Study visa (500 visa)

Study visa is for the purpose of studying, researching and practicing in Australia for a certain period of time. From 01/07/2016, the study visa category for students has the following important changes:

For new student visa applicants:

  • From 1 July 2016, there will be only one type of student visa available to study in Australia – the Student visa (500 visa).
  • After 1 July 2016, if you want to study in Australia, you need to apply for a Student visa (under the 500 visa) regardless of your major.
  • From July 1, 2016, all Student visa applications must be submitted online via ImmiAccount.
  • Paper student visa applications submitted during or after July 1, 2016, including those submitted to the Visa Application Center (VAC) prior to July 1 but received at the VAC on or after July 1, will be considered invalid and returned to the applicant with the previously paid student visa fee.

For those who currently hold a visa:

  • If you have a student visa from 570 to 576, your visa will still be valid, and the conditions for your visa will not change after July 1, 2016.
  • After 1 July 2016, family members of current Student visa holders (570-576) need to apply for a 500 visa if they wish to visit relatives in Australia.

Transit Visa (category 771)

This type of visa is for those who transit through Australia on their journey to another country or to Australia for crew/crew purposes. You are allowed to enter and stay in Australia for no more than 72 hours and are not allowed to travel to other countries.

Transit visas are required even if you are just waiting in the transit lounge and not leaving the airport or connecting to the same flight that took you to Australia.

In addition, this visa requires you to meet certain health standards and to be responsible for all medical expenses while you are in Australia. You will not be covered under Australia's national health plan (Medicare) unless your country has a mutual health care agreement with Australia.

Visiting relative visa 

Currently, a visitor visa in Australia is also considered as a tourist visa and can be applied for as a tourist visa 600 Australia with a term of 3 to 12 months, depending on the purpose of the trip. You can only enter once, if you want to return to Australia after leaving Australia, you must apply for a new visa, or be allowed to enter and leave Australia several times during the term of the visa.

In case of sponsorship, only permanent residents or Australian citizens over 18 years old who have lived stably in Australia for more than 2 years can sponsor their relatives to Australia. Students, people working in Australia, ... can only send invitations to relatives to Australia.

You should apply for a visa to visit relatives before 4 weeks to ensure the schedule of the trip

You may need to explain in front of the Embassy to confirm that you really intend to travel to and visit your family in Australia. Therefore, you will need to prove that:

+ Purpose of visa.
+ Proof of sufficient funds to pay for the trip.
+ Two-way flight tickets, addresses of hotels or relatives' houses, etc.
+ Detailed and detailed plan for your trip to Australia.
+ Constraints in Vietnam, reasons to definitely return to Vietnam such as family, stable occupation, ...
+ If there are no asset constraints such as houses, land, vehicles, etc. and the only financial constraint is the current job, it must prove the importance as well as future career development plan.

How to apply for an Australian visa

Step 1: Learn about Australian visas

Before applying for an Australian visa, you must determine what your xisa needs and purposes are in order to choose the right type of visa.

Once you know the type of visa you need to apply for, read through the information related to the type of visa including visa fees, documents to submit, photo requirements, and visa processing along with the visa application for the given type of visa.

You should read the specific instructions and complete your visa application. You can also apply for a visa at the Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC) or download it at Documents and declarations.

Step 2: How to apply

1. Select the type of visa that suits your purpose of visiting Australia and download the visa application form. You can obtain the application form at the Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC)

2. Your visa application may require additional documents. For a list of documents required to be submitted with your visa category, please see the list of documents by visa category. To avoid delays, please prepare all the required documents and submit them at the same time you apply for your visa.

3. Arrange the visa application payment fee in Vietnamese currency. You can also pay the fee by credit card.

4. Appointment in advance for application is required. Appointment is required to visit the Australian Visa Application Centre (AVAC), submit your application and obtain biometrics samples.

Valid visa application form is a completed form with signature of the applicant and payment of visa application fee. Application form of applicant under 18 years old should be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

The required documents should be submitted with the visa application. Documents not in English should be accompanied by a notarized translation into English.

For faster application processing, you should submit all required documents and other relevant documents at the same time as your visa application. If you do not provide all specific documents at the same time as your visa application, your application may be considered only through the documents you have provided. Australian immigration law allows the decision to be made at any time after receiving your visa application.

Step 3: After submitting the application
