Australian vocational study and migration in 2022: six subject areas to consider

1. What is Australia Vocational Study Abroad?

Vocational study abroad is the same as other forms of study abroad, only the difference is:

  • Faster learning time: 1-2 hours
  • Cheap tuition: from A$6000/year
  • Guaranteed internship opportunities after completing a vocational study abroad course (or internship is a requirement for graduation from some schools)
  • Trained practical skills
  • The curriculum is always updated as soon as possible to suit the market demand
  • Guaranteed admission to university with several majors

Vocational courses in Australia are called VET and overseas vocational courses in Australia are called VET Courses. VET is Vocational Education & Training meaning vocational training and coaching.

Vocational study is really a trend and a very potential future that is ignored by many young Vietnamese. Let's find out more about vocational study in Australia with Greatlink.

2. Why Study Abroad in Australia is Your Best Choice in 2022?

In Vietnam, vocational training in Japan, Korea, Australia, Germany and conditions to study abroad such as time, cost, quality of training are quite similar. But what makes Australian vocational training most attractive is:

  • English: if you learn Japanese, you can only use it in Japan, similar to Korean or German, but with the opportunity to practice English while studying abroad in Australia, you can use this second language anywhere in the world. Especially for those who do not have the ability to learn the language well, English using the ABC alphabet is still easier to learn than other figurative languages.
  • Australia has the highest base salary in the world: with the minimum wage for any type of work in Australia for people over 18 years old currently in February 2022 of $20.33/hour equivalent to 345,000 VND.

But if you ask anyone in Australia, you will know that the houses bordering the sea, the million-dollar villas, the expensive European cars are likely to belong to a “handy man” who does manual work.

This is because in Australia they have a culture that values the amount of effort you put into a job, things like road repairs that pay up to $31.42/hour, or aged care that pays $29/hour.

So 1 year you can earn at least $62,000 as soon as you graduate vocational training courses in Australia.

The opportunities of studying abroad are much higher than in other countries because the professions in the vocational training course for international students are on the annual Australian immigration list.

You can easily sponsor your relatives to Australia when studying abroad in Australia

When choosing to study in Australia, you will have the opportunity to interact with people from many different cultures because Australia is a country of cultural diversity and race. What you will definitely miss if you choose Korea or Japan, even Germany.

3. What are the majors available in Australia?

VET courses in Australia have hundreds of institutions across Australia so anyone can find a course that suits them.

In addition, VET courses offer training programs at various levels as follows:

4. What is the difference between studying abroad for a career in Australia and studying abroad for a university degree?

Vocational training abroad courses usually focus on practical skills that you will actually use in the majors mentioned above, while undergraduate studies will usually focus on theory and analysis.

As mentioned at the beginning, VET courses will often require you to “go out and learn”, also known as a hands-on experience. This gives you a real work experience and immediately applies the knowledge you have just learned to work.

If your goal is to graduate early and get a job right away, vocational training abroad is a perfect choice!

If you still want to have a university degree, VET course also has courses that allow you to go directly to university without requiring any additional conditions other than a vocational course diploma. More details read below.

5. What qualifications do I need to study abroad?

There are 6 different levels of study you can consider when studying abroad for a career in Australia, the choices will depend on the end purpose of your study.

a. Vocational Certificate – Certificate I to IV

If you want to try a new profession or have not studied for a long time and want to update your knowledge, these are the perfect courses for you.

The knowledge from these vocational training courses provides the basic knowledge and essential skills required by Australian industries, and with some you can immediately go to work after obtaining a vocational certificate.

From number 1 (I) to number 4 (IV), the higher the number, the more valuable your diploma will be after graduation, and it's usually 6 months to 1 year if you went to school full - time.

b. Diploma – Diploma

If your purpose in studying abroad in Australia is to learn more in-depth about a certain field, or to advance to a higher level position in the industry, a diploma can be perfect for you because the knowledge you learn will be more in-depth than vocational certificates.

Some college degrees are often used as a bridge between high school and university because (1) some diplomas are transferable to university without any additional requirements and (2) some courses are transferable to university in the second year without having to study the first year.

It usually takes 12-24 months of full-time study to graduate.

c. Advanced Diploma – Advanced Diploma

The biggest difference between a diploma and an advanced diploma is the duration of study and the amount of knowledge.

Advanced Diploma program will have the same level as university. The duration of Advanced Diploma will be from 18-24 months.

d. Learn English – English language Courses

Since there is a higher number of people who want to study abroad in Australia than there are people who can speak English, many vocational schools in Australia also offer English courses to help you improve your language skills before entering or before you go to work.

Courses can last from 4 weeks to 48 weeks, depending on your English ability and financial ability.

6. Who is it for to study abroad in Australia?

  • For those who are learning about short courses and can go to work soon after graduation, this is the perfect choice.
  • For those who want to learn practical knowledge instead of theory every day, and for those who want to practice instead of writing essays and taking final exams, this is the course for you.
  • For those who do n't have a lot of savings and can't afford long - term courses in college, VET is the best option for you.
  • People who do n't want to go through the complicated college application process
  • For those who do not yet have a good level of English (IELTS 6.5 – 7.0) but still want to realize the Australian dream and will improve their English ability through experience, vocational study abroad is your right choice.
  • Someone who does n't want to go into 3 - 5 years of college in a major he or she does n't know he or she really likes.
  • If you're planning on going to a higher education (university, master's) but you want to be different from the crowd and take a better, easier, cheaper route that is n't well known to many people.

What are the benefits of studying VET before going to university?

1. Small classes of less than 20 students allow one-to-one teachers and more advanced teaching

2. Practice practical work for more than 3 years in university

3. Graduate in just 1 year

4. The curriculum is updated faster than the University

5. Get direct admission to top universities in Australia

6. Skip the first year of university → just 1 year of VET and 2 years of university to graduate with at least 2 degrees

7. Tuition and study time are unchanged, and even cheaper

8. Experienced teachers with decades of experience in the market and decided to teach because they want to train the next generation better. Not just doctoral professors who know the theory of books.

7. How long does it take to study abroad in Australia?

From 6 months to 2 years depending on the course you choose and the diploma you desire

  • Certificate I – IV: less than 1 year
  • Diploma: 12-24 months
  • Advanced Diploma: 28-24 months

8. How much does it cost to study abroad in Australia?

Unlike universities that require tuition fees for students up to more than $30,000 / year, the cost of vocational training in Australia is more breathable from $4000-$10,000 / year only.

9. What are the conditions for studying abroad in Australia?

The entry requirements for vocational study abroad courses in Australia will vary depending on what course you choose. Some majors require you to have certain qualifications previously (THPT), some courses just require you to have basic reading and calculation abilities.

  • Reading and numeracy tests: required by some disciplines to prove that you can best absorb the content of the curriculum.
  • An interview and personal profile may be required for a few courses
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for international students
  • IELTS scores of 5.0 – 5.5 for III – IV certificate courses, and 5.5 or higher for Diploma courses or equivalent scores in other English certificates.
