Vocational education: Vocational training

Whether you're looking to work right away, or to get a head start on college and university studies, a Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificate can get you where you want to go.

The sector of vocational training in Australia is based on collaboration between governments and industries. Government schools, known as Vocational and Technical Schools (TAFE), as well as private schools, issue VET certificates. The Australian Government (federal and state) funds capital, develops policies and enforces management, and ensures quality. Industrial groups and employers are involved in contributing to training policies and advantages, and in developing qualifications that provide skills for the workforce.

Learning with the experts...

There's nothing more exciting than learning from someone who shares your passion – and who is doing it at the highest level. In Australia, VET instructors are not only knowledgeable about the industry, but also have hands-on experience in their specialized fields – maintaining popular knowledge, and changing their courses to meet the changing focus and requirements of the industry. This means that you're not just learning theory, but learning the practical knowledge of the subjects.

...and learn from professional practice

Many of our VET courses are combined with on-campus practical time, which means you not only study in the classroom, but also gain valuable practical experience in a real working environment. It is these practical experiences that ensure you are fully prepared to work in the industry of your choice.

Quality Assurance

In Australia, the quality of education is guaranteed. In fact, the rights of international students, the quality of training and the right to access up-to-date and accurate information are protected by law – through the Educational Services for International Students (ESOS) Act 2000. In addition, the national governing body for VET – Occupational Education and Training Quality Assurance Agency (ASQA)(opens in a new window) - ensuring the quality of our VET training for over 1.2 million students - including over 230,000 international students.

Vocational certificates

Vocational Education and Training (VET) schools specialize in offering courses that give you skills related to industries, including administration, retail, tourism and hospitality, construction, energy, public services and healthcare, transport, mining, manufacturing and technology.

Vocational qualifications are awarded based on academic results, and focus on training occupational skills and competencies. The Australian National Qualifications Framework (AQF) recognises previous academic results and/or current competencies making credit transfer easier and providing students with flexible transfer programs. Qualifications are arranged into four levels (Certificates I. II, III, and IV), Certificate courses and Advanced Certificates.

VET training will broaden your skills within a range and teach you the practical experience you will need when working. The course will train you to design, plan and implement the practical and technical aspects of the industry.

Quality Assurance

Australia has national bodies responsible for the regulation and quality of higher education programs – the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Authority (TEQSA)(opens in a new window). The Australian Government has established this body to control universities and non-universities, monitor quality and set standards.

In addition, the following are the rights of students that are protected by law under the Educational Services for International Students (ESOS) 2000 Law:

  • Benefits of all international students.
  • Quality of student training.
  • Provide timely and accurate information.

Education Quality Index

The Quality of Education Index (QILT) website helps us understand the quality of education based on comparisons between schools, institutions or industry groups. The information is provided based on the results of thousands of surveys for domestic, international and alumni students studying in Australia. The website also provides a satisfaction index for students who have studied in Australia and a percentage of students who have a job after graduation and their average salary.
